Get the boundary right first

The island of Ireland has 32 traditional counties grouped into Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster. Twenty-six are in the Republic of Ireland and six are in Northern Ireland. These traditional counties are a geographical and cultural reference; they are not a list of present-day local government authorities.

Ulster and Northern Ireland are different sets. Ulster has nine counties. Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan are in Ulster and the Republic of Ireland. The other six Ulster counties are in Northern Ireland. When a question names one set, do not silently substitute the other.

Find a county

Filter by province or jurisdiction, or search for a county. The result count updates as you narrow the set. “Derry / Londonderry” is one county entry with two commonly used names, not two separate counties.

A province-sized memory route

Connacht · 5. Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. Learn the whole group before trying to remember which one feels less obvious.

Leinster · 12. Work through the east and midlands in smaller groups; distinguish Meath from Westmeath and remember that a county and its largest town need not have the same name.

Munster · 6. Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford. A six-name group is a manageable recall exercise.

Ulster · 9. First learn all nine; then mark the three in the Republic and six in Northern Ireland. This two-stage exercise trains the distinction that a simple 26/6 total can hide.

Three checks before your next quiz

Which three Ulster counties are in the Republic?

Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan. Use the Ulster and Republic filters above to see the three-name set.

Practice answer: name all five Connacht counties

Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. This is an original study exercise, not a daily Boreen answer.

Practice answer: name the six Northern Ireland counties

Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry / Londonderry and Tyrone. Their traditional county identities should not be confused with modern council districts.
